Schizophrenia and Social Stigma The Formation Mechanisms and Its Overcoming

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a representative unknown area in human history, with many prejudices and stigmas, and its aspects persist in modern society where science has developed. In particular, schizophrenia has been cited as the cause of major violent incidents in recent years in our society, and social stigma against schizophrenia is becoming fixed with fear and hatred associated with crime. In this study, it is analyzed the nature and formation mechanisms of social stigma against schizophrenia currently spread in our society, and discussed the problems that result. And by re-examining the meaning of ¡°social¡± of social stigma, it was argued that the stigma against schizophrenia was a result of historical and social situations rather than based on scientific and objective facts. Finally, as a way to overcome the social stigma of schizophrenia, these are proposed: a knowledge community beyond the barriers of each disciplines, a search for ethics of the others, the improvement of awareness promoting media ethics, activation of movement of people concerned through more support, preventive and multi-faceted support, re-appropriation of stigma and hatred.
